What One Needs To Know Concerning Bariatric Surgery In Mexico

By Linda Ruiz

Gastric bypass and other forms of surgery meant for weight loss make changes to the human digestive system for purposes of weight loss. This is made possible by reducing the amount of food an individual can take or through reducing quantity of nutrients absorbed. The surgical procedures are usually considered when exercise and diet have failed to be effective, or when those affected suffer from serious health problems owing to their weight. When considering bariatric surgery in Mexico there are many things to put into consideration.

The various types of weight loss surgery are collectively known as bariatric surgery, one of the commonest being gastric bypass. It is preferred by many because it comes with fewer complications when compared with other procedures. That notwithstanding, these procedures are major and thus come with certain risks. Besides, one will be required to make permanent changes to their health in terms of the diet and also be ready to undertake regular exercise. These facilitate long term success of the procedure.

The procedure is carried out to reduce the risk of health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and severe sleep apnea. In short, it is for people whose body mass index is 40 or higher. These are considered to suffer from extreme obesity, or those who are obese but have serious health problems like type 2 diabetes. These however are not the sole requirements since one may need to undergo a thorough medical screening process to qualify.

Among the expected risks are the occurrence of blood clots, infections, gastrointestinal leaks, bleeding problems and excessive bleeding. Some of the long term risks are stomach perforation, bowel obstruction, hernia, low blood sugar and ulcers. Though there is the possibility of death, this is normally very rare. The possibility of the risks will differ with different individuals and will also depend on how well the procedure is done.

There are clear instructions on how to prepare for people that have qualified for the procedure. They may be required to go for lab tests and medical exams in prior. There will be some restrictions as to what an individual may eat or drink or the medicines they can take. Taking part in physical activities and avoidance of smoking are requirements. It is important to arrange for recovery by for example making arrangements for help at home if there is need.

It is possible that the surgeries could fail to work as is hoped. There could be a problem either during or even after the procedure, although this is rare. For instance, the adjustable band may not work properly. This will mean weight loss fails to be achieved or one develops serious complications. One needs to keep scheduled follow-appointments that precede surgery. In case of any complications or side effects, the doctor needs to be notified at once.

It is possible that one may not lose enough weight or even gain weight afterwards. This is possible even if the procedure worked properly. Weight gain may be experienced if one does not follow the recommended lifestyle changes.

There needs to be a permanent health change in diet and regular exercise to prevent weight gain. Intake of high calorie foods should be avoided. These are likely to hinder weight loss.
